Over 90% of the retail sector in Palestine consists of family-owned businesses, mainly SME’s (Small and Medium Enterprises).
Up until the year 2000, there were no retail chains in Palestine. Even today, there is only a minimal presence of multinational brand names. Companies tried to establish themselves between 2001-2007, however they were not successful due to the bad economic climate.
In 2008-2009, the improvement in the economic situation prompted some local companies to start representing well known brand names, such as Pierre Cardin.
The food part of the retail sector now includes small chains – national brands, such as Checkers, Tommaso’s, Goodies. These are all successful and doing well.
As for the retail of hi-tech, household appliances and electronics, three big chains cover most of the requirements of the Palestinian cities.
In the supermarkets and groceries part of the sector, one fast growing chain is called Bravo.
